"I think all of these sort of really weird and, frankly, offensive statements about rape come down to the real difficulty the republican party has with the heart of the right to life movement. If you really assert that every embryo is a human being with a full human right to life—then of course you have to be opposed to abortion in the case of rape. Because that’s a human being in the same way any other fetus is a human being. But for most Americans, most people would say, “But wait a minute, you’re really gonna force a woman who was raped to bear that child?” And so that’s why there is this profound intellectual contradiction at the heart of the right to life movement and the republicans are really grappling with that."
